Amy Voterakis launches in time for Melbourne Design Week
May 17, 2024
Whilst we are predominantly an online platform (for now...), it’s important to me that artists have the opportunity to show their work in person. Art deserves to be seen, enjoyed, and experienced beyond a screen. So, just in time for Melbourne Design Week, we’re launching our first 'gypsy exhibition' — collaborating with Hali Rugs in Richmond to transform their showroom into part gallery for the duration of Design Week.
From 13–17 May, I’m proud to present Surfacing, an exhibition of new work by emerging ceramicist Alexandra Howie. Inspired by the drapery depicted in Classical and Hellenistic sculpture, archetypal forms are overlaid with hand-sculpted clay, meticulously attended to with scalpel and burnisher, then glazed, to render the forms as if swathed in folded fabric and wet-drapery.

It feels fitting to be back participating in Melbourne Design Week, Australia’s largest and leading annual design festival. As Creative Director at Modern Times, Design Week was always a highlight — curating exhibitions, championing contemporary Australian design, and promoting functional art were some of the most exciting parts of my role. I’m also proud that several works exhibited during those years were acquired by the NGV.

So, let’s just say — it feels good to be back. And with this exhibition marking Howie’s very first, it's new beginnings all round. I’m honoured to facilitate the debut show of such an exceptional young artist — a star whose rise is only just beginning.
I'll be seeking out more sites for exhibitions in the months ahead so if you or anyone you know would like to collaborate, get in touch!
Surfacing is part of Melbourne Design Week 2025, an initiative of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
