This Reliquary box expresses key aspects of John O’Loughlin’s ceramic practice, incorporating religious motifs and age-worn surfaces that reflect a personal reckoning with faith and religion. The terracotta box takes an architectural form topped with a spire-like cross. Greek iconography that embellishes the sides is moulded from the bread taken at communion in the Orthodox church. Detail is accentuated and highlighted by a rubbed-back slip in white.
O’Loughlin’s work often turns to questions of faith, stemming from his Catholic upbringing and its enduring focus on miracles, the afterlife, and the ‘Cult of the Saints'. These personal reflections take form in reliquaries, shrines, and ceremonial vessels, each a tangible meditation on his central question: Do I believe in miracles?
