Georgia MacGuire

Georgia Macguire is a Wurundjeri woman whose heart beats for “Community, Culture and Country.” Her works — often realised through natural materials such as paperbark, feathers and grasses — are not only rich expressions of a deep relationship with kin and country, but also powerful meditations on the beauty and generosity of the natural world.

Community, Culture, and Country form a sacred triad that defines her identity as a proud Aboriginal woman. Raised in the vibrant and passionate Aboriginal community in Canberra during the 70s and 80s, she was nurtured and emboldened by the wisdom of her Aunties and Uncles, who were tireless advocates for change. It was here that she discovered the transformative power of collective purpose.

Throughout her journey, she has been steadfast in her commitment to revitalizing and fortifying her cultural roots, both in her personal relationships and through her artistic endeavours. She has been honoured through her relationships with artists like Aunty Bronwyn Razem and Aunty Glenda Nicholls, who generously imparted their wisdom and skills, serving as unwavering beacons of matriarchal love and inspiration. Her art serves as a bridge, connecting her to others and sharing her unique perspective as a First Nations woman in what is now known as Australia.

MacGuire has exhibited widely in Victoria including her solo show Onemda at Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 2024 and is held in both public and private collections. MacGuire was the recipient of the Victorian Indigenous Art Award in 2013 for both three dimensional works and Arts Victoria People’s Choice Award. Other projects of note include the collaborative 'Creative Resilience' public monument commissioned for The Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, and MacGuire's 'Woven Together' public sculpture for the Truganina Community Centre.
