Nicki McCann

Nicki McCann’s ceramic practice represents nearly a decade-long evolution from functional craft to sculptural expression. Working on Awabakal country in Newcastle, NSW, She creates pieces that explore the intersection of traditional techniques and contemporary vision, pushing the boundaries of what clay can communicate.

Each sculptural work is an exploration of texture, form, and composition, inviting viewers to engage with the tactile and visual richness of ceramic art. Her recent pieces blend Baroque-inspired extravagance with contemporary sensibilities, incorporating delicate hand-sculpted elements adorned with gold and mother of pearl lustre. From tenderly sculpted blooms to shimmering ribbons that cascade in graceful arcs, every curve and flourish tells a story of elegance, romance, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Beyond solo practice, collaboration fuels McCann’s creative process. Working across disciplines with painters, photographers, and other makers allows me to explore new dimensions of ceramic artistry and challenge traditional boundaries between mediums.
She strives to create work that not only captivates the eye but also sparks a deeper connection, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity found within the art of ceramics.

Nicki has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and been a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize and National Emerging Art Prize. Most recently McCann collaborated with painter Peter Gardiner on a series of major works exhibited at Sydney Contemporary with Nanda/Hobbs Gallery.
